If you live in Louisiana, what are your options for Medicare plans? How do you choose the best one? Pro tip: it helps to work with a Medicare broker who will be your guide through and through. Below, The Fussell Group Insurance Advisors will outline your options and give the info you need to make a good decision.

Medicare By the Numbers

Over 800,000 people are enrolled in Medicare in Louisiana. Roughly 40% of them decide to get their benefits through Medicare Advantage. Others prefer to stay with Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

According to eHealth Medicare, more than 75% of Medicare users in Louisiana have Part D, the prescription drug benefit. Low-income folks with Medicare in the pelican state may be able to receive financial aid through specific programs.

Enrollment for Louisiana Medicare Plans

Louisiana residents qualify for Medicare when they turn 65. Most folks are automatically enrolled in Part A. If you need to add a supplement, you can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period which begins three months before your birth month and ends the three months after.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Louisiana

Roughly 42% of Louisiana Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Advantage plans. Also known as Medicare Part C coverage, Medicare Advantage is a private plan that offers all the benefits of A and B, plus extra ones dental, vision, and (most of the time) prescription drugs.

The availability for these plans depends on the parish, ranging from 19 to 44 plans. The Fussell Group Insurance Advisors can show you what’s available in your area.

Medicare Supplement Plans in Louisiana

If you’re concerned about the costs that Original Medicare leaves behind, an insurance agent can help you find a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to make sure you have great coverage.

Medigap policies in Louisiana cover some (or all) of the deductibles and coinsurance leftover by Parts A and B. This can save you a lot of money since Original Medicare covers about 80% of your outpatient costs. That other 20% may not seem like a lot at first, but it adds up if you visit the doctor often. A supplement would also put a limit on your out-of-pocket spending!

Did you know? 45 companies offer Medicare Supplements in Louisiana. The state requires these companies to sell plans to people under 65, but they get charged higher premiums.

Again, we suggest you enroll in a Medigap plan during initial enrollment. During this window, you can’t be denied for health reasons.

Prescription Drug Plans in Louisiana

Since Original Medicare and Medigap don’t offer prescription drug benefits, you have the choice to add a Part D plan.

According to healthinsurance.org, there are over 25 stand-alone Medicare drug plans available in LA for 2021. Premiums range from around $7 to $93 per month. Over 300,000 Louisiana Medicare recipients have stand-alone drug coverage.
