Top 3 Medicare Supplement Companies in 2021

by | Jan 29, 2021

Private insurance companies sell Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans to help lower some out-of-pocket Medicare costs. If you’re considering Medigap insurance, you can buy a plan through a broker like us or through the insurance company directly. Either way, it’s critical to find someone you can trust.

We’ve identified the top three carriers in 2021 based on financial stability and customer service. We’ll include the company’s A.M. Best Rating, S&P Rating, and how long they’ve been in business.

1) Aetna

Aetna was founded in 1853, so they’ve been in the market for a while. While we offer plans with many top companies, Aetna might be your best option.

A.M. Best Rating: A

S&P Ratings: A+

Aetna Medigap plans have a 12-month rate lock, which means you’ll have the same rate — with no increases — during the first year. They offer a spouse discount to people who have an active Medigap policy with the same Aetna company. Aetna also provides household discounts; the amount differs by state.

In 2021, the following benefit plans are available: A, B, F, G, High Deductible G, and N.

2) Cigna

Cigna has a 200+ year journey in the insurance industry. It began in 1792 under the name Insurance Company of North America. Now, Cigna designs Medigap policies with a focus on pre-existing conditions. While many carriers have strict eligibility requirements for their policies, Cigna will cover beneficiaries with severe issues that most companies would turn down.

A.M. Best Rating: A

S&P Ratings: A

Your plan options include A, F, High Deductible F, G, and N. Cigna offers competitive rates and a 7% household discount when both spouses enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan. The amounts differ by state.

Cigna’s online platform lets members access their coverage, arrange payments, update info, print ID cards, and more.

3) Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insures about one in every three Americans, and they have more than 100 million members nationwide. People may refer to the company as Anthem. For Medigap plans, the household discount is 5% in most states.

A.M. Best Rating: A

S&P Ratings: A-

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana was founded in 1934 in New Orleans. Policyholders mutually own this private, nonprofit company. The company’s Medicare Supplement products include:

BlueChoice 65 is a series of Medigap plans that lets you choose almost any doctor or hospital. You get direct access to specialists, a new hospice care benefit, and coverage for your skilled nursing coinsurance.

BlueChoice 65 Select is a series of Medicare Select plans that offer lower monthly premiums using a specific hospital network for inpatient services. At the hospitals, you don’t have to worry about the Part A deductible and coinsurance. You can still pick almost any doctor.

**Talk to an insurance agent about benefit exclusions, limitations, and reductions.

Note: In Louisiana, all Medigap plans are available to people eligible for Medicare because of a disability.
